California’s Governor Schwarzenegger on Friday said the cost of services to illegal immigrants, which has been estimated at $4 billion to $5 billion annually, is a “small percentage” of the deficit California faces.

Now let me see. California’s deficit is around $24 billion. Let’s take the low side of the cost of services to illegal immigrants . . . 24/4 . . . Wow! That is about 17% of the budget. Yet Arnold call it a “small percentage.” That kind of math is exactly why California is in trouble.

But it is even more disappointing because it is dismissed as a problem because it is just a “small percentage.” What the Governor, the California Legislature and indeed, Mr. Obama and the Federal g0vernment fail to grasp is when you add up all the “small percentages” (even if they are really small) you get a whole lot of money.
