Ted Stephens, Senator from Alaska, and the Senate’s longest serving Republican Senator was convicted of felony corruption charges in 2008. This was just before the elections of 2008 and basically cost him his seat.
He lost to a Democrat as many did in that election where the electorate decided for a change of direction.
Now it seems he more than likely would have won as he very likely would have been found innocent — if the government had not lied about their case. His conviction will be vacated due to prosecutorial misconduct.
I wonder if this had happened to a senior Democratic Senator how many hearings, special prosecutors, etc. would be called for.
